Miami-Erie Canal Path
The "good ole days" live on as you stroll the canal towpath imagining what life was like for the settlers in the 1800's. To improve transportation and help sell produce, Irish, French and German immigrants labored for 31 cents a day and a jigger of whiskey to mannually move trees, rocks and soil to create the "big ditch" through the wilderness. Begun on July 25, 1825 near Middletown, OH the Miami and Erie Canal traverses 249 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo and was completed in 1845.
The canal is still mostly intact, with many historic structures, bridges and aqueducts along the way. The 40-mile towpath along State Route 66 from Delphos to Ft. Loramie is a great place to walk and enjoy nature's beauty. It has been designated as a State Scenic Byway. www.meccainc.org
