Just a reminder to start off a new fishing season. For any newcomers to our reports, we do not spin a big story about how good the fishing is just to get you here. We realize that your time and money are at a premium and we will only report what we hear or experience ourselves. I go to other lakes in hopes of good fishing also, I know you have a choice of where to go and if you decide to come to Grand Lake I want your trip to be as productive as possible so that you return again and again. Everyone knows that Grand Lake was a premier Crappie lake and we have gone thru a down couple of years but we hope things are better this year, that being said we will not bait you to our lake. Ok, here goes!

CATFISH --- Last Saturday The Outdoorsman held their 1st Catfish tournament of the season! The weather was about as ugly as you could get and they still had a nice turn out. Despite cold weather, high winds, and a little dampness, they still had 55 teams sign in and 1st place caught 35+lbs in only 8 fish. Thats almost 4 1/2lbs average. Not bad for conditions. There were a few teams that braved the water conditions, but most teams were content to bank fish out of safety mostly. The Catfish just never seem to let up on this lake. Fresh shad, which are very easy to get now, shrimp, and nightcrawlers all seemed to work well. With all the rain, the creeks are running into the lake fast, lots of turmoil and the Cats like that. If you like Catfishing its worth the trip right now, and if you want to fish for pan fish, which are doing pretty good right now, and you don't do well pan fishing then you can always salvage the trip with Catfish.

CRAPPIES--- Actually the past week was pretty good for Crappie! We have seen some real nice size Crappie and catches in the 20s and 30s. The fish are there, the only problem is the high water has changed your favorite hole because of the depth but just adjust for it. It makes it hard for the not so regular guys to see the good spots as easy but the Crappie are in the channel, in the spots that you would expect them to be and once we get some warm weather they should really turn on. The same baits that have always worked here are what people are still using. Hair jigs, rubber, minnows and wax worms. Dark colors seem to be good now as the water is pretty cloudy at best because of all the high water. Just about the time the water shows any sign of clearing up it rains again or the winds kick up for a day or two. Not to get too excited, it looks like we are off to a fairly decent start, we just need some nice weather to warm the water up and we'll see what happens. We have seen fish of all sizes which indicates that there are different hatches out there.

BLUEGILLS--- For the last month we have had some of our die hard fishermen that were looking for Crappies find Bluegills instead, and took alot of fish that had to be sorted but there were some very nice size  fish. Then, on the next trip they just started fishing for Bluegills and did pretty good. Like I said they had to sort them but you could end up with a good catch.

WALLEYE--- Under the spillway is doing very good for Walleye! Some guys have limited out and we had 2 fish brought into the shop that weighed in at over 7 1/2lbs!! After last nights rain the spillway might be running too fast again, but it is definately worth checking out and keeping an eye out. Orange, chartruese and combinations of, in 3-4 inch curly tails on 5/8 oz. heads bounced off the bottom or suspended close to the bottom and let the current run it. If walleye are under  the spillway this big then they are in the lake this big cause thats were they are coming from so maybe this year we can get a handle on how to catch the on the lake. As I have always said and the State supports it, these Walleye are out there in good numbers, we just have to find the right presentation in that small window that this shallow lake provides. Were is Bill Dance when you need him? Any way, good luck there and let us know if you do any good. In fact if you catch one bring it into the shop for a picture and a free dozen nightcrawlers.

WEATHER--- The lake is probably about 15 inces over the spillway right now. We got a lot of rain last night that is still draining  into the lake at a pretty fast rate. Some rain forcast for today, Saturday is supposed to be sunny, high of 50 and then rain again on Sunday and Monday with a little drop in temperature, then nice for Tuesday on. As I said before the water is very churnned up.   Well, we hope to see you this week, we will try to keep current reports on here as the weather gets nicer and fishing gets better. If you have anything to report to us that we can pass along to others that come  here we would appreciate it. Despite the high water, all ramps are accessable. Docks are a few inches underwater and very slick if you venture out on one be careful. Please stop at Windy Point Sportsman Shop for all of you fishing needs and we have gas, pop, beer, sandwiches, snacks, and you name it. Thanks for visiting this sight and good luck on you fishing trip.

NOTICE:  Doug updates reports when patterns change and if the report is old it is because the conditions and patterns have not changed significantly.
