Coming soon to Auglaize & Mercer Counties:

Information Update!

Mercer County is getting ready for the upcoming 2010 running season and Mercer Health is proud to be a part of it! Every 5K race in Mercer County is included in this year’s Mercer Health 5K Challenge. A web site about all of the races can be found at www.mercerhealth5kchallenge.com Here you’ll find registration sheets, updated information about the Mercer Health 5K Challenge and an ongoing listing of the standings as the season progresses.

In addition, the economic impact of these races on the communities throughout the county is pretty impressive. A mailing to over 1400 participants from last year’s races has just gone out. Organizers are hoping to increase these numbers this year. For more information about the Mercer Health 5K Challenge, visit the web site or contact Steve Schmidt at 419-586-6555.

The Saint John’s Bible 2010

Biblical Prints Art Show 2010

Hosted by St. Charles Center Aug22-Sept. 10

Art that inspires

You can not help but be touched and affected by the images and words of The Saint John’s Bible.  Prints will be on display at Saint Charles Senior Living Community.

A monumental achievement and historic undertaking, The Saint John’s Bible is

a major artistic, cultural and spiritual endeavor.  It is the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the invention of the printing press.

Donald Jackson, world renowned calligrapher and illuminator in collaboration with artists and theologians, has woven word and image in this once–in-a-millennium project.  This work of art unites an ancient tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium. Commissioned in 1998 by the monks of Saint John’s Abbey and Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, this decade-long project has resulted in a Bible for our time.  The Saint John’s Bible is a unique blend of ancient methods, materials and tools with modern themes, images, technology and text.  The Saint John’s Bible is monumental – two feet tall and three feet wide with nearly 11,000 pages bound in seven distinct volumes.

The final version of the Bible is a wonder, It is defined as “spiritual meditations on a text” as opposed to mere illustrations.  It’s that spiritual element that elevates these drawings – as well as those who experience them.  Each print brings to life not only the stories of the Bible, but the significance of the words.

If you approach these illuminations as works of art, it’s a collection worth seeing.  But by bringing with you even the smallest seed of faith and hope, you can be touched on an even deeper level.

Saint Charles Senior Living Community, 2860 U.S. Route 127, Carthagena, OH will host an exhibit of 25 prints  from this Bible, August 22 through Sept. 10, 2010.

The hours when the exhibit will be open have not yet been established by the planning committee.  Individuals as well as groups are welcome.

Whether you have a deep reverence for Scripture, are drawn to the precise work of the quill, are an avid art collector or just curious about this fascinating manuscript you won’t want to miss this exhibit.  Selected books and note cards will be available

for purchase. For more information, please contact Sister Martha Bertke, C.PP.S.,

LIA Bar Stool Open

Come out and show everyone your putt-putt skills on August 14th while enjoying a great day on Grand Lake St. Marys and a lot of the bars this great lake has to offer.

Date:  August 14th

Time  9:00 am  (shotgun start)

The Bar Stool Open is a miniature golf tournament with holes located at participating restaurants and bars around the lake.  This year we have commitments from 13 establishments.  Each establishment can have 14 teams (although we have allowed more than that in the past), with each team having 4 players.  The players must furnish their own putters and golf balls.  The entry fee is $100 per team.  Cash payouts go to the top three teams (low scores).  The teams go to each establishment in a sequential order; they can go by land or water. Along with the golf, there is a pontoon decorating contest.  The top three pontoons (as selected by our unbiased judges) are awarded cash prizes.

The sign-up sheets, rules, and publicity posters should be in the establishments around Memorial Day.  Teams should sign up early at their preferred establishment to ensure their starting hole. bobdeb78@woh.rr.com, or by phone at 41

Celina, Ohio-The 2010 Governors Cup Regatta was cancelled due to Grand Lake St. Marys water quality issues. The regatta event committee decided to use the date to thank the boat racers and fans for all their support  and to help raise money to improve Grand Lake St. Marys.

The Governors Cup "Save the Lake" Musicfest is planned for Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 1 to 11 pm in Celina's Lakeshore Park.  The event will feature music from four great bands as well as good food, beverages and fun games and contests. Hydroplane race boats will be on display during the event.  All money raised will be donated to the Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Initiative. Information on the plans to restore the lake will also be available at the event.

Governors Cup Regatta Co-Chairman Allen Baskett said the group is disappointed that the race was cancelled and wanted to channel all their energies into saying thank you to the race fans and boat race teams. They also wanted to find a way to help fund the efforts being made to clean the lake.  Baskett said they will be hosting the 2011 APBA World Championships and look forward to bringing hydroplane racing action back to Grand Lake St. Marys.
